The Pink Slip Checklist: What Actually Fails

A NSW pink slip — officially an eSafety check — is a safety inspection, not a service. It confirms your car meets the minimum standards for registration, and most light vehicles more than five years old need one each year before the rego can be renewed. It takes around half an hour, and the result goes to Transport for NSW electronically, so there’s no paperwork to carry anywhere.

Because it’s a safety check rather than a mechanical assessment, cars fail on the same small handful of items over and over. Almost all of them are things you can look at yourself in a driveway in ten minutes.

The five things that fail most often

1. Tyres

Tread depth below the legal minimum, uneven wear across the tread, or damage to the sidewall. Uneven wear is worth paying attention to for another reason: it usually means something in the suspension or alignment is out, and it will eat the new tyres too if it isn’t sorted.

2. Brakes

Pads worn past their limit, scored or lipped discs, or a handbrake that won’t hold. If yours squeal, grind or feel spongy, that’s worth addressing before the inspection rather than after — brake repairs are typically a same-day job here.

3. Lights

A blown brake light or indicator is the single most common fail, and the cheapest to fix. Walk around the car with someone pressing the pedal and the indicator stalk before you come in.

4. Windscreen and wipers

Cracks or chips in the driver’s line of sight will fail, as will wipers that smear rather than clear. Wiper blades take two minutes to change.

5. Steering and suspension play

Worn ball joints, tie rod ends or bushes show up as slop in the steering or a car that wanders on the highway. This is the one on the list you can’t reliably check yourself.

What a pink slip does not cover

It isn’t a service and it isn’t a health check. A car can be well overdue for a logbook service and still pass, and a car that drives perfectly can fail on a worn bush. It also isn’t a guarantee that a used car is a good buy — that catches people out regularly.

What happens if it fails

You get a report listing exactly what didn’t pass. You don’t have to have the repairs done at the same workshop, though most people do because it’s one trip instead of three.
