Clutch repairs
Slipping, shuddering, a heavy pedal or a bite point that's crept up near the top — we diagnose what's actually wrong before quoting a replacement. Manual vehicles, all makes and models.
Clutches wear gradually, which is why most people adjust their driving without noticing. These are the signs that it’s gone past normal wear.
Worth saying before you brace for the bill: several of the symptoms above have causes that cost a fraction of a clutch replacement, and we’d rather find that out than sell you the big job.
A pedal that feels heavy, spongy or sinks to the floor is often the hydraulics — the master or slave cylinder — rather than the clutch itself. That’s a much smaller repair. A shudder on take-off can come from worn engine or gearbox mounts. Difficulty selecting gears can be a linkage or cable issue.
So we test before we quote. If the clutch genuinely is worn out, you’ll get told clearly and shown why. If it’s something else, you save several hundred dollars and a day off the road.
Reaching the clutch means removing the gearbox, which is why the labour is the larger part of the cost rather than the parts. Once it’s out, we’re looking at everything in there while access is easy, because going back in six months later for the sake of a small saving is a poor trade.
A replacement normally means the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing together as a kit. We inspect the flywheel, the spigot bearing, the rear main seal for leaks, and the hydraulics. Anything that needs doing gets a phone call with the price before it happens.
Plan on the car being with us for the day, often overnight. If you need it back by a particular time, tell us when you book and we’ll be straight with you about whether that’s realistic.
While the car is here, it’s a sensible time to have the service done or the pink slip sorted if either is close to due.

Common questions
What people want to know before committing to a job this size.
That's a slipping clutch under load, and driving on it can damage the flywheel too. Call (02) 4261 5199 and we'll get it looked at.
Call (02) 4261 5199The clearest test is in a high gear under load. If the engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate to match — going up a hill in fourth, for instance — the clutch is slipping. A burning smell after a hill climb or heavy traffic is the same message.
Most clutch replacements need the car for a full day, and often overnight. The gearbox has to come out to reach the clutch, which is what makes it a bigger job than the parts alone suggest. We tell you the expected turnaround when you book.
It varies a lot by vehicle, because the labour depends on how the gearbox comes out and some cars are far more involved than others. We quote on your specific make and model before any work starts — give us the rego and we'll price it.
Normally the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing as a kit, since replacing one without the others means going back in later for the sake of a small saving. We also check the flywheel, the spigot bearing and the hydraulics while the gearbox is out.
Not always. We inspect it once the gearbox is out. If it's within specification and the surface is even it can often be machined or reused; if it's heat-damaged, cracked or a dual-mass unit that's worn, it needs replacing. Either way you get a call with the finding and the cost before we proceed.
Not always the clutch. A heavy or sinking pedal can be the hydraulics — master or slave cylinder — rather than the clutch itself, and that's a much smaller job. A shudder can come from engine or gearbox mounts. We diagnose it before quoting a replacement.
For a short while, gently, but it will get worse and it can take the flywheel with it — which adds significantly to the bill. If it's slipping badly enough to notice in normal driving, book it in rather than waiting for it to fail somewhere inconvenient.
