Brake Repairs in Dapto

Grinding, squealing, pulling or a pedal that sinks — we find what's actually causing it and fix it, usually the same day. Pads, discs, lines and handbrake, all makes and models.

Start With What the Car Is Doing

Brakes tell you they’re worn long before they stop working. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth a look.

Signs your brakes need attention

  • A high-pitched squeal when you brake lightly
  • Grinding or scraping — stop driving on it
  • The pedal feels soft, spongy or sinks under your foot
  • The car pulls left or right when you brake
  • A shudder or pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel
  • You need more pedal travel than you used to
  • The handbrake no longer holds on a slope
  • A brake warning light on the dash
  • Visible scoring or a lip on the edge of the disc

What each noise usually means

A squeal on light braking is almost always the wear indicator doing its job — a small metal tab built into the pad specifically to touch the disc and make that noise when the friction material is nearly gone. It’s a warning rather than an emergency, but it means you’re within weeks, not months. Read more on why brakes squeak and what the noise means.

A grind or scrape is a different matter. That’s the metal backing plate running directly on the disc, and every stop from then on is cutting into a part that costs several times what the pad did. If your brakes are grinding, book them in now rather than at the weekend.

A shudder or pulsing through the pedal generally means the disc surface is no longer flat, often from heat. A soft or sinking pedal points at the hydraulic side — air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak in a line, hose or caliper. And a car that pulls to one side usually has a sticking caliper on the opposite wheel, though worn suspension components can produce the same feel, which is why we check both.

Pads, Discs, or Both?

This is the question that decides the bill, so we measure rather than guess. Brake discs have a minimum thickness stamped by the manufacturer. If yours are comfortably above it and the surface is even, new pads on their own are the right call and there’s no reason to sell you more.

If the discs are below spec, deeply scored, or have a pronounced lip around the outer edge, replacing pads alone is false economy — the new pads bed onto an uneven surface and wear out fast, and you’ll be back inside a year. In that case we do both, and we tell you why before we start.

What a brake job involves

We pull the wheels, measure pad thickness and disc thickness, inspect the calipers and slide pins for sticking, check the lines and hoses for perishing or leaks, and look at the fluid condition. You get a phone call with what we found and the price. Once you say go, most jobs are done the same day, then road-tested before you collect it.

Rego due as well?

Brakes are one of the most common pink slip failures. If your registration is coming up, get both done on the one visit — it costs less than failing the inspection and coming back for a re-check.

Common questions

Brake Repair Questions

What people ask when they ring up about a noise.

Grinding right now?

Don't leave it for the weekend. Call (02) 4261 5199 and we'll get the car in — a pad replacement caught early costs a fraction of pads and discs.

Why are my brakes squealing?

A high-pitched squeal on light braking is most often the wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to touch the disc and make that exact noise when the pad material is nearly gone. It's a warning, not an emergency, but it means you're close to metal on metal.

Is a grinding noise when braking serious?

Yes — stop driving on it. A grinding or scraping sound usually means the pad has worn through and the metal backing is running directly on the disc. Every stop from that point damages the disc further, turning a straightforward pad replacement into pads and discs.

Do I need new discs or just new pads?

It depends on how much disc thickness is left and what condition the surface is in. We measure the discs rather than guess. If they're above the minimum and the surface is even, pads alone will do. If they're below spec, scored or lipped, replacing pads alone would just chew through the new ones.

How long does a brake job take?

Most pad and disc jobs are same-day, and often only a couple of hours. If we need to order a part for a less common vehicle we'll tell you when you book rather than after we've pulled the wheels off.

Why does my brake pedal feel spongy?

A soft or sinking pedal usually points at air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak in a line, hose or caliper. It is a safety issue rather than a comfort one, so it's worth getting looked at promptly rather than at the next service.

Why does the car pull to one side when I brake?

Usually a sticking caliper or a seized slide pin on one wheel, so one side does more of the work. It can also be uneven pad wear or a suspension issue. We check both sides and the suspension components before deciding what needs replacing.

Will worn brakes fail a pink slip?

Yes. Brakes are one of the most common eSafety inspection failures. If your rego is due, it is usually cheaper to sort the brakes and the inspection on one visit than to fail, get the work done, and come back for a re-check.
