Suspension & alignment

Suspension Repairs in Dapto

Shock absorbers, struts, springs, bushes and ball joints, plus wheel alignment — for a car that sits right, steers straight and stops the way it should.

Your Tyres Will Tell You First

Suspension is the one thing on a car that people genuinely stop noticing. It goes gradually, you adjust your driving without realising, and the car feels normal because it’s been that way for two years.

Which is why the tyres are the better evidence. Wear along one edge of the tread almost always means the alignment is out. Cupped or scalloped wear — patchy high and low spots you can feel by running a hand across the tread — points at worn shocks or struts letting the wheel bounce. Both patterns cost you a set of tyres well before they should.

It matters beyond comfort, too. Worn shocks lengthen your stopping distance and let the car pitch under braking, so it changes how the brakes behave when you actually need them.

Signs the suspension needs looking at

  • The car keeps bouncing after a bump instead of settling
  • Clunking or knocking over speed humps and potholes
  • The nose dives noticeably under braking
  • The car wanders or pulls on a straight, flat road
  • The steering wheel sits off-centre when driving straight
  • Uneven or cupped tyre wear
  • The car leans heavily through corners or roundabouts
  • One corner sits visibly lower than the others
  • Oily residue running down a shock absorber body

What We Repair and Replace

Suspension is a system of parts that wear at different rates. We inspect the lot rather than replacing the obvious one and sending you off.

  • Shock absorbers and struts
  • Coil springs and spring seats
  • Strut mounts and bearings
  • Control arms and bushes
  • Ball joints and tie rod ends
  • Sway bar links and bushes
  • Steering rack and idler components
  • Wheel bearings
  • Wheel alignment and geometry

Wheel Alignment

An alignment sets the angles at which your wheels meet the road. When they’re out, the tyres scrub sideways every metre you drive — which is why a car with poor alignment can destroy a set of tyres in a fraction of their expected life while feeling more or less fine to drive.

Once a year is a sensible interval for most cars. It’s also worth doing whenever you fit new tyres, after you’ve hit a serious pothole or kerb, and always after suspension components have been replaced — new struts or tie rod ends change the geometry, so skipping the alignment afterwards undoes some of the benefit of the repair.

Signs yours is due: the car drifts on a flat road, the steering wheel sits off-centre when you’re travelling straight, or one edge of a tyre is wearing faster than the rest.

Rego due?

Excessive play in ball joints, tie rod ends or bushes, and leaking shocks, are all pink slip failure items — and they’re the hardest ones to check yourself. If your registration is coming up, have the suspension looked at first.

Common questions

Suspension Questions

Mostly about noises, tyre wear, and how often an alignment is actually needed.

Chewing through tyres?

That's usually alignment or worn shocks, and new tyres won't fix it — they'll just wear out the same way. Call (02) 4261 5199 and we'll find the cause.

How do I know if my shock absorbers are worn?

The clearest signs are a car that keeps bouncing after a bump instead of settling in one movement, nose-diving under braking, and cupped or scalloped wear across the tyre tread. Worn shocks also lengthen your stopping distance, which is why they are an inspection item rather than a comfort one.

How often should I get a wheel alignment?

Once a year is a reasonable rule for most cars, and any time you fit new tyres, hit a serious pothole or have suspension components replaced. If the car pulls to one side on a flat road or the steering wheel sits off-centre, get it done sooner — you're wearing tyres out in the meantime.

Why are my tyres wearing unevenly?

Wear on one edge usually means the alignment is out. Cupped or patchy wear across the tread generally points at worn shocks or struts. Wear in the centre or on both edges is normally a tyre pressure issue. The pattern tells you which, which is why we look at the tyres before anything else.

Will worn suspension fail a pink slip?

It can. Excessive play in ball joints, tie rod ends or bushes, along with leaking shock absorbers, are all NSW eSafety inspection failure items. If your rego is due it is worth having the suspension checked before you book the inspection.

What does clunking over bumps mean?

Usually worn bushes, sway bar links or top strut mounts. Sway bar links in particular are a common cause of a light clunk over small bumps and are one of the more affordable suspension repairs, so it is worth getting the noise identified rather than living with it.

Do I need to replace shocks in pairs?

Yes, always across an axle. Fitting one new shock alongside an old one gives you different damping on each side of the car, which affects how it behaves under braking and in a corner. Replacing both front or both rear together keeps it balanced.

Do you do wheel alignment as well as the repairs?

Yes, and after suspension work it is part of doing the job properly. Replacing struts, control arms or tie rod ends changes the geometry, so an alignment afterwards is what stops the new parts wearing your tyres out.
