Rego Check & Pink Slip in Dapto

Your annual eSafety check, done in about half an hour and lodged with Transport for NSW electronically. If something needs fixing to pass, we handle it here — one stop, no running between workshops.

Who needs a pink slip in NSW?

Most light vehicles more than five years old need a pink slip each year before the registration can be renewed. The five years run from the date on the compliance plate, and your renewal notice from Transport for NSW will tell you whether an inspection is required. If your car is newer than that, you can generally renew without one.

The inspection — officially an eSafety check — confirms the car meets the minimum safety standards to be on the road. It covers the things that keep you out of trouble: brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, windscreen, seatbelts and the exhaust. It is a safety check, not a service, and not a health assessment of the whole car.

Central East Mechanical is an authorised NSW inspection station, which means our licensed inspectors can carry out the check and send the result straight to Transport for NSW. Once it passes, you can renew your rego the same day.

What Happens on the Day

Half an hour, start to finish, for most cars.

  1. 01

    Drop the car in

Bring it to 7/20 Marshall Street, Dapto NSW 2530. All we need is the car and your rego number — no paperwork.

  2. 02

    We inspect it

A licensed inspector works through the safety checklist: brakes, tyres, steering, lights, windscreen, seatbelts and exhaust.

  3. 03

Pass or fail, you get told

If it passes, the result goes to Transport for NSW electronically. If not, you get a report listing exactly what didn't meet the standard.

  4. 04

    Repairs, if needed

We quote anything that failed before touching it. Most items we can fix and re-check the same day.

Before you book in

A few minutes in the driveway can save you a re-inspection. The most common fails are a blown brake light or indicator, tyres below the legal tread depth, worn brake pads, a chipped windscreen in the driver’s line of sight, and wipers that smear. Four of those five you can check yourself.

We wrote up the full list in our pink slip checklist, alongside the rest of our car care advice, if you want the detail. If you already know something is worn — the brakes are squealing, say — it’s usually cheaper to sort the brake repair and the inspection on the same visit than to fail and come back.

Get it done with your service

If your logbook service is due around the same time, ask for both on one booking. The car’s already up on the hoist, so it saves you a second trip.

What the inspection covers

  • Brakes — pads, discs, lines and handbrake operation
  • Tyres — tread depth, wear pattern and sidewall condition
  • Steering and suspension — play, bushes and ball joints
  • Lights — headlights, brake lights, indicators and reflectors
  • Windscreen and wipers — cracks, chips and blade condition
  • Seatbelts — condition, operation and mounting
  • Exhaust — leaks, mounting and excessive noise
  • Body and chassis — rust or damage affecting safety

Common questions

Pink Slip Questions

What Dapto drivers ask us most when their rego is due.

Rego due this week?

Ring the workshop on (02) 4261 5199. If there's a gap in the day we can usually get the inspection done while you wait.

Do I need a pink slip this year?

If your light vehicle is more than five years old and the registration is due for renewal, yes. Your renewal notice from Transport for NSW will say whether an inspection is required. Vehicles under five years old are generally exempt.

How long does a pink slip take?

About half an hour for most cars. If we're quiet you can often wait for it; otherwise drop the car off and we'll call you when it's done.

Do I need to book, or can I just turn up?

Booking is safer, especially on a Saturday morning when the workshop fills up. Ring us on the day and if there's a gap we'll fit you in.

What happens if my car fails the inspection?

You get a report listing exactly what didn't pass, and you have time to get it repaired. You're not obliged to have the work done here, though most people do because we can usually fix the fault and re-check the car the same day rather than sending you elsewhere and back.

What do I need to bring?

Just the car and your rego number. The result is lodged with Transport for NSW electronically, so there's no paper certificate to collect or carry to Service NSW — you can renew online once it's passed.

How much does a pink slip cost?

The maximum fee for a light vehicle inspection is set by Transport for NSW, so it's the same wherever you go. Any repairs needed to pass are quoted separately, and we'll always call you with the price before doing them.

How long is the inspection report valid?

A NSW safety inspection report is valid for six months, so you need to renew your registration within that window for the report to still count.

Is a pink slip the same as a blue slip?

No. A pink slip is the annual eSafety check for a currently registered vehicle. A blue slip is a different inspection, for unregistered vehicles, interstate transfers or cars with a defect notice, and it's carried out at an AUVIS station.
